Chapter 9 Asher LevAs Asher spent more time with Kahn he became more like him. Asher began to paint like Kahn and Asher began to spend almost every day of the week at Kahn's studio. When Asher painting a student, a classmate, he does not want to show anger and hatred toward the student. I found this strange, because Asher always has shown his true feeling in his painting. I did not understand why, now he did not draw the classmate like he, Asher sees him.
An important part of the novel is when Asher has to draw a nude model at Kahn's studio. Kahn says that the Rebbe did not want Asher to draw nude people. However, Kahn is deviant and tells Asher that he is letting him draw nude models anyway and disobeying the Rebbe. "Asher Lev, the Rebbe told me never to permit you to draw this way. I have chosen to disregard the Rebbe. The nude is a form of art I want you to master. To attempt to achieve greatness in art without mastering tis art form is like attempting to be a great Hasidic teacher withouth the knowledge of the Kabbalah."(219) When Asher goes along with Kahn and paints the nude model, I was surprised. I did not expect Asher to go along with Kahn and go against the Rebbe. The Rebbe is the all important being that Asher is to obey and respect. When he goes against the Rebbe's wishes and sides with Kahn in painting a nude model... I believe that Asher is entering the world of the goyim. Now that Asher has taken this step of rebelious attitude, I am sure that he will rebel again.
"I barely recognized my father. He was gaunt. He limped badly. His eyes were tired. His beard was turning gray. He was nearly forty, but he looked to be sixty. I cried inside myself when I first saw him."(222) As much as Asher defies his father's morals, and rules, he truly still loves him. Asher has not seen his father is a very long time. Asher has left his family in a sense. Now, Asher is a painter not a son, not a Hasidic Jew. He as disobeyed so many expectations of his parents-especially his father. When Asher sees his father he realizes how much he has missed him and how much a part of his life his father used to be. Now, art has taken the place of family in Asher's life. When he sees his father it triggers an emotion of saddness and possibly regret.
