Journal: 2 Hobbit

In the novel The Hobbit, the main character, a hobbit, Bilbo Baggins, discovers that there is more to a hobbit than what most think. In this novel, Bilbo Baggins goes on an adventure. Bilbo learns to accepts the ways of the dwarfs that join on this adventure. He grows not only in strength, but in character.

The adventure starts off with the dwarfs accepting Bilbo to be the fourteenth party to their adventure. Bilbo, as the story progresses is accepted by the dwarfs. The first true sign of his acceptance was when Bilbo saw the dream of the goblins taking the horses. When this happened Bilbo woke all of the dwarfs up and Gandolf was able to disappear. Also, Bilbo found the ring that made him invisible and helped him escape from the goblins. Bilbo escaped by himself, without the help of the dwarfs. This experience, helped him grow in self esteem and helped him believe in himself. With this new found strength, Bilbo was able to kill a spider and free all of the dwarfs form the dungeon. While the dwarfs were still in the dungeon, Thalin, the head dwarf says: "Gandolf spoke true, as usual. A pretty fine burglar you make, it seems, when the time comes. I am sure we are all for ever at you service, whatever happens after this."(p.178) Bilbo is not only accepted, but praised by the head dwarf.

I, personally found it funny that the dwarfs took so long to accept Bilbo. I did not understand why it took them so long to see that Bilbo was a good person and a great addition to their team. I mean, after all, Bilbo killed the spiders escaped from the goblins without their help. I just did not understand why they did not accept him earlier on in the novel. Then, I understood that in order for the dwarfs to accept Bilbo as a great person, Bilbo had accept himself as a great person. It was amazing to see how Bilbo learned that he was important and that he was brave.

When the true problem arises, it is Bilbo who confronts the dragon, Smaug, unaided and alone. When he does this he uses the strength and courage that he has gained form the past experiences. Bilbo learns that the dragon is missing scales on his stomach, now he holds the key to killing the dragon.

Instead of being greedy with the treasure that Bilbo inherits from the dwarfs, he gives his share to Bard, the person who killed the dragon. Bilbo, learns that greed plays a major role in the ending of the novel. This is because the problem started off with greed. The dragon, captured or took all of the treasure and would not share it because he was greedy. Then, Thalin, does not want to share the treasure, and a major augment strikes up. Now, this argument starts a war going between the elves and dwarfs and whether or not the treasure is going to be shared. Again, greed takes place. Bilbo, sees this greed and learns that the treasure is not worth being greedy, therefore he gives his share away. Bilbo also learns that the lesson of becoming accepted and gaining self esteem, will never replace the greed for the treasure.
